Position Goal

Employee will work closely with the Transportation Supervisor in the daily operations of the Transportation Department. As Routing Coordinator the employee will use VersaTrans to create and update bus routes for all schools, address traffic concerns and reroute as necessary. As Dispatcher the employee will monitor Transportation Department radio communication, contact drivers and act as a liaison between parents and drivers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

As Routing Coordinator

 

  1. Uses VersaTrans computerized routing system for routing school buses and updating maps.

  2. Implements alternate routes in case of road closure, etc.

  3. Inputs new students and student changes into computer.

  4. Coordinates scheduling of sports buses and shuttles.

  5. Coordinates and assigns field trip buses.

  6. Coordinates and assigns late buses.

  7. Receives visitors and answers phone calls.

  8. Verifies calculations on time cards; submits time cards to Transportation Supervisor for signature.

  9. Maintains necessary paperwork and records. Compiles data for the annual Transportation Route Report.

  10. Administers student disciplinary referrals and addresses parent concerns. Keeps a record of documented contact.

  11. Works as Relief Driver and/or Relief Dispatcher when needed.

  12. Performs other clerical responsibilities and other duties as assigned.

 

As Dispatcher

 

  1. Prioritizes radio and telephone traffic and dispatches appropriately.

  2. Dispatches Bus Drivers for daily routes and special trips.

  3. Dispatches orders and relays messages and special instructions to drivers and supervisors.

  4. Assists drivers by relaying directions around road closures, construction, etc.

  5. Receives telephone or radio reports of accidents, delays, equipment breakdowns and other operating or maintenance difficulties.

  6. Reports difficulties to the appropriate authority (mechanic, transportation supervisor, sheriff’s office, etc.)

  7. Coordinates replacements for disabled buses.

  8. Contact substitute drivers when necessary.

  9. Keeps a log of parent/public complaints and documents incidents.

  10. Keeps a daily driver schedule and absence log.

  11. Assists with payroll.

  12. Performs observations of buses along routes to ensure that service is provided according to schedule.

  13. Works as Relief Driver when needed.

  14. Performs other clerical responsibilities and other duties as assigned.

The employee will be required to move and control an adult-sized wheelchair. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally team lift and/or move a student with disabilities.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

Salary Schedule: Support Staff Initial Salary Placement 

Benefits: Per District Policy

Evaluation: Annual

Contract: 12 Months, 260 Days per Year        

Hours: Full-time, 8 Hours per Day

Reports to: Transportation Supervisor or Director of Support Services

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
