- Must have a high School Diploma or GED.
- Must have or be able to obtain Arizona CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
- Must have or be able to obtain CPR Certification.
- Must be able to assess concerns and complaints of students and proceed appropriately.
- Must sustain a safe driving record.
- Ability to use 2-way radio for communication.
- Must be able to operate all doors, windows and lifts on various school buses.
- Must be able to properly use car seats, seat belts, safety restraints and harnesses and must be able to move a wheelchair into the bus and secure properly.
- Ability to speak clearly and effectively to students, parents and District employees.
- Ability to manage groups of children.
- Sufficient rudimentary knowledge of bus mechanical operations to describe problems to mechanic.
- Knowledge of local streets and address system.
Position Goal
The Bus Driver transports students to and from designated stops while maintaining a safe environment and in accordance with the policies of the J.O. Combs Elementary School District and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). When transporting children with special needs, the Bus Driver is responsible for ensuring the students are secured properly and appropriately for transport to and from school.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assists students needing assistance boarding and exiting bus. Assists students during emergency evacuation.
- Advises students and other passengers of behavior requirements for enforcing procedures and ensuring safety.
- Conducts bi-annual school bus safety drills with students and regularly informs students about bus safety.
- Obeys all traffic laws.
- Maintains a positive and professional attitude and demeanor.
- Assesses incidents, complaints and potential emergency situations and reports major problems to supervisor.
- Surveys school bus stops and routes for potential hazards and reports hazards to principal or supervisor.
- Reports needed repairs and damage to the Mechanic or Transportation Supervisor.
- Completes and maintains documentation of pre-trip inspection in compliance with State regulations.
- Assists with ongoing program of general maintenance and upkeep of any assigned bus to include sweeping, cleaning of the seats and windows.
- Maintains a current listing of students including emergency contact information.
- Attends safety meetings and trainings related to State and District requirements.
- Ensures that communications between bus and other drivers and between bus and school are working effectively prior to departing from the school.
- Prepares required reports and documents and submits them in a timely manner to the proper authorities.
- Submits to drug and/or alcohol testing when required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally team lift and/or move a student with disabilities.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
