Description

Position Goal

The Custodian works under supervision and is responsible for the care, maintenance and sanitation of District grounds and facilities. Working in accordance with District and Health Department standards, the Custodian cleans and maintains building and grounds areas; cleans classrooms, cafeteria, halls, restrooms, locker rooms, sidewalks and other areas; performs minor repair and maintenance work and sets up for special events.

 

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Ability to push and pull and use repetitive foot, arm, shoulder, hand and back movements as necessary to complete assignment.

  • Ability to regularly lift and carry 50 pounds.

  • Proficiency in the use of custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals.

  • Experience in custodial work or equivalence in a commercial or institutional setting preferred.

  • Ability to work outside in both heat and cold.

  • Ability to work varied seasonal shifts.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and interpret Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and vacuums hallways, stairs and office space.

  2. Uses floor cleaning machine and other equipment.  

  3. Properly uses chemicals necessary to maintain cleanliness and sanitary conditions in assigned areas.

  4. Cleans debris from sidewalk.

  5. Empties trash and garbage containers and dispose of trash appropriately.

  6. Maintains supplies, equipment, etc. and notifies supervisor when additional supplies are necessary.

  7. Maintains building, occasionally performing minor and routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and other related maintenance activities. Changes light bulbs and replaces air conditioner filters.

  8. Inspects work area to ensure safety and cleanliness and identifies necessary repairs.

  9. Notifies supervisor concerning major repairs or additions to lighting, heating and ventilating equipment.

  10. Evaluates emergency situations requiring immediate attention and proceeds appropriately (i.e. overflowing toilet, cleaning up after an ill student, sudden structural hazard, etc.).

  11. Unlocks or lock up areas or buildings as directed by the Lead Custodian.

  12. Turns off lights in unoccupied areas. Turn off or lower heading and cooling in unoccupied areas.

  13. Keeps custodial closets clean and orderly.

  14. Sets up and assists for special events including arranging furnishings, maintaining trash, and installing or assisting with special equipment needed. Clean grounds and buildings after special events.

  15. Participates in custodial training sessions and inservices as scheduled.

  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee will be engaged in daily strenuous physical activity. The employee is frequently required to walk, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is frequently required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally team lift and move up to 100 pounds. The employee frequently is required to move about the campus. The employee is occasionally required to sit.  

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme cold.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    

Salary Schedule: Support Staff Initial Salary Placement Range 104

Hours: Part-Time Evenings, 4 Hours per Day- Days/Evenings
